Само понятие «семейный», или «контролируемый семьей», бизнес не поддается четкому определению. Во многих компаниях семья может и не владеть контрольным пакетом; при этом по историческим или иным причинам она по-прежнему оказывает решающее влияние не только на компанию, но и на местное сообщество. Поэтому условимся считать находящимися под контролем семьи фирмы и организации, где члены семьи сохраняют право решающего голоса при определении стратегических направлений развития и назначениях на ключевые руководящие должности.
