1. “You must excuse me, Mr. Flint, but I need to step out for a few minutes.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to me.” 2. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to discuss something with my assistant.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us.” 3. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to make a very important phone call.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us.” 4. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to powder my nose.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us.” 5. “You must excuse me, ladies, but I need to put the children to bed.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Wilma.” (Заметьте: именно to bed, a не to sleep! 6. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to answer the phone.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us.” 7. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to answer the door.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us.” “You must excuse me, ladies, but I need to check the salt.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Wilma.” Перед поездкой нужно проверить состояние шин – check the tiers, уровень масла и воды в машине – check the oil and the water.) 9. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to check my mail.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us.” 10. “You must excuse me, ladies, but I need to check on the pie.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Wilma.” (To check on something or somebody – это проверить, в каком состоянии находится что-то или кто-то. 11. “You must excuse me, ladies, but I need to check on the stew.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Wilma.” 12. “You must excuse me, ladies, but I will leave you for a few minutes. I need to check on my luggage.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Fred.” (Сравните: “The customs officer checked all my luggage very carefully.” п.) 13. “You must excuse me, ladies, but I will leave you for a minute. I need to check on the children.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Wilma.” 14. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I will leave you for a minute. I need to check on my patients.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Doctor.” 15. “You must excuse me, gentlemen, but I will leave you for a minute. I need to check on our prisoner.” “Certainly. You don’t need to apologize to us, Sir.”
